PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of cafeteria during, between, and after food serving times

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to understand basic food preparation, cleaning methods, and safety procedures
  • Ability to operate large and small kitchen equipment, tools and cleaning equipment
  • Ability to understand instructions and communicate in basic English
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Ability to carry out directives from direct supervisor and work effectively with minimum supervision
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies
  • Ability to perform manual skills necessary for custodial work

Experience:

  • Experience in custodial work preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Keep all areas of cafeteria neat, clean and sanitary, with special attention given to tables, chairs and/or benches, wall area at tray drop off, and floor during, between, and after serving times
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash
  • Assist with cleaning kitchen and food preparation area after meals have been served
  • Follow and comply with safety and sanitation rules and regulations
  • Store and handle food items and supplies safely and in accordance with established procedures
  • Keep kitchen and cafeteria areas clean and sanitary, as assigned
  • Assist with maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies and complete supply requests as needed
  • Wash pots and pans, operate dishwasher, clean equipment, clean work surfaces, sweep and mop
  • Maintain a clean and organized storage area and garbage collection area
  • Move tables, chairs and kitchen equipment for cleaning purposes, as required
  • Report any unsafe conditions in a timely manner to your immediate supervisor to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel
  • Work cooperatively with all personnel and students
  • Move furniture and equipment as directed by principal
  • Assist with setting up and taking down facilities/equipment for special events
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used:

  • Large and small kitchen equipment and tools including electric slicer, mixer, pressure steamer, broom, mop, small hand tools
  • Sharp cutting tools, ovens, dishwasher, food, utility cart, buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, washing machine, clothes dryer

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
