PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Coordinate the routine cleaning and maintenance procedures necessary to maintain a high standard of safety, security, cleanliness, and efficiency of the building operations and grounds, and monitor the performance and deficiencies of custodial staff.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent, preferred
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of plant operations, cleaning methods and procedures, minor repairs, security, heating and ventilation, and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies 

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years in custodial services,
  • Supervisory ability or Supervisory experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work closely with custodial staff to train them in the proper use of materials and equipment
  • Establish procedures for locking, checking, and safe guarding facilities
  • Oversee, when requested, the physical arrangements for school rental, dances and other extracurricular activities
  • Propose shift schedules and inform the administration when replacement or extra help is required
  • Inform the principal and designee of defective or unsafe plant conditions
  • Complete minor repairs, when requested, within his/her resources and any necessary adjustments to plant equipment and fixtures
  • Submit work orders on maintenance repairs and conduct follow-up to insure timely completions, with assistance from school administrators
  • Develop daily work schedules for campus custodians, when requested by the school administration
  • Attend custodial in-service when requested
  • Handle emergencies and perform other assignments directed by the principal or designee
  • May be required to do some touch up painting
  • Implement and maintain established cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms
  • Keeps light bulbs and tubes replaced
  • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean
  • Comply with local law and procedures for storage and disposal of trash
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs 
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

Monitor and direct the work of custodians

 

Equipment Used: 

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
  • Buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, hand tools, shampooer

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, ladders and/or ramps, using a scissor lift, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, heavy, 45 pounds or more

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
  • Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
